MMXXVII · Three rooms open

Disagree
in good
company.

the.salon is a salon in the old sense: a host, a circle of regulars, one question an evening, every week, by voice. Most rooms are closed; some are open to listeners. Every evening becomes a podcast episode.

N°01 · The AI conductor

The conductor
never raises
its voice.

The conductor is an AI that runs the room, so the host can take part in it rather than police it. It follows the dynamic the host chose, step by step, and speaks only to keep the rules. The host presides; the conductor keeps order.

What it does
Calls
Calls each speaker by name. A microphone opens when a name is called and closes when the time ends, so nobody speaks over anyone.
Keeps time
Holds every step to the length the host set, and says when a turn has run out.
Restates
Asks an objector to restate the other side before answering it.
Names the crux
Proposes the point where the disagreement actually lies, for the host to accept or change.
Warns
Tells whoever breaks the rules of the room, privately, on their screen alone.
Learns
Learns from each session: how long this circle's turns really run, where its arguments stall, which rules it tests. The next evening's timing and prompts are tuned to match. See a summary →
What it never does
Argue
It takes no side and offers no opinion on the question.
Score
It never rates a speaker, an argument or a member.
Open the room
Only the host decides whether a room is circle only or open to listeners. Listeners never speak.
Overrule
The host can pause, change or end any step. The conductor follows.
N°02 · Debate dynamics

Four ways
to disagree
well.

A dynamic is the shape of the argument: who speaks, in what order, for how long, and what the circle must do before it answers. The host picks one for the room; the conductor runs it as written, and every one opens with introductions.

    N°03 · The podcast

Every evening becomes an episode, in the voices that argued it.

The rooms are for the circle. The podcast is for everyone else: the host introduces the question, and the evening is edited down to what moved the circle, the crux and the dissent.

    What the circle concluded

Keep the school; rebuild what it measures. The final exam, more than the classroom, is the part of the school built for a world that no longer exists.

The circle did not settle whether teachers can be trusted with assessment that is not standardised. Two members held for rebuilding, and their reasons are in the episode. What would change the circle's mind: one school system that changed its final exam and saw no change in how teaching is done within five years.

    1. 24 h before01 →

      A 90-second statement.

Every member records where they stand, in their own voice. Nobody reacts yet.

    2. The evening · 21:00 CET02 →

One question, one dynamic, one evening.

The host picks the dynamic; the conductor runs it as written, from introductions to the last word. The host presides; the conductor holds the structure.

    3. [Within a week]03

      The episode, for everyone else.

What the circle concluded, the argument that moved it, the crux and the dissent, in the voices that argued it, introduced by the host.

Listeners, never an audience. No video. No scores. No feed. No paywall.

    What it is not

    Disagree
    in good
    company.

For four centuries the salon produced serious debate among people who disagreed, because a host chose the circle, the question was stated, the rules were kept in the room, and the same circle came back. We kept all four. We added a conductor.

    N°05 · Membership

The rooms are for members of the network.

Requests are vetted on Fridays. A member vouches, a host accepts, and a seat makes you one of a room's regulars. Members pay nothing; rooms are paid for by their hosts and patrons.
